Cancer: Taking Part in the Fight
"It's not just genetics."
-Time Magazine, January 12, 2010
Research findings show that external factors have a substantial hand in the development of cancer in Americans.
"80% of all cancers are attributed to environmental factors including exposure to carcinogenic chemicals."
-International Agency for Research on Cancer & the World Health Organization
The Interphone Study, conducted by the World Health Organization (WHO) was completed in May of 2010. The ten year study examined cell phone use among individuals, and research evidence showed that people who use cell phones for thirty minutes a day for ten years have a greater risk of developing brain cancer.
Each day, our bodies take in approximately 210 mcg of carcinogenic, hormone-disrupting chemicals called phthalates, which are found in every soft and flexible plastic we use.
"Cancer, above all other diseases, has countless secondary causes. But, even for cancer, there is only one prime cause. Summarized in a few words, the prime cause of cancer is the replacement of the respiration of oxygen in normal body cells by a fermentation of sugar."
-Nobel Prize Winner Dr. Otto Warburg, 1931
The benefits of a healthy diet don't end at feelings of wellness and energy. Eating correctly can prevent a bevy of diseases, including cancer. Yet Americans are alarmingly unaware of this link between nutrition and disease.
"How can you assert the vital relationship between diet and cancer and then submit a preliminary budget that only allocates a little more than 1% of the National Cancer Institute Funds to this problem?"
-Former Senator George McGovern
Glutathione: The Body's Natural Security System
Glutathione is a small, antioxidant molecule that is naturally produced by inside cells of the body. This important natural antioxidant can detoxify by neutralizing excess free radicals: unstable atoms in our body.
Free radicals are naturally occurring and useful for many bodily functions, such as digestion, but pollutants in our everyday environment promote an unhealthy supply of them. Excess free radicals are linked to disease, early aging and a reduction of oxygen supply in our cells.
These harmful effects are curbed by antioxidants, and glutathione is a natural antioxidant produced and required by the body. Insufficient levels of glutathione have been linked to cancer, AIDS and other serious diseases, as well as autism. In fact, Dr. Boyd Haley (University of Kentucky) states that "In Autistic children, glutathione levels are less than half the normal levels."
Luckily, eating right gives us the ability to produce glutathione at optimum levels! That is why a commitment to a proper nutritional diet is essential for wellness.
"We've already found dozens of ways to live an extra decade or two - in good health. The easiest and surest way: Increase your body's supply of glutathione. Take glutathione precursors or eat more cruciferous veggies (broccoli, kale, cauliflower, Brussels sprouts, cabbage, etc.) Of course, we recognize that some people would much prefer dying to eating Brussels sprouts."

A Toxic Environment: Our Response?
Unfortunately, we are exposed to toxic materials simply by living in the environment we live in. The outdoor causes are obvious: smog, pollution and natural allergens. On top of this, according to the Environmental Protection Agency, our indoor environment is two to five times more toxic than our outdoor environment. This is caused by a laundry list of toxic substances found in our household products and molds in our living spaces. In some cases, the EPA Office of Radiation and Indoor Air has stated that air measurements indoors have been found to be up to 100 times more polluted ( www.epa.gov/iaq/).
Being aware of these realities is the first step in preventing these toxins from causing harm in your own body.
